Where delta 8 comes from
Delta 8 THC occurs naturally in cannabis, but only in trace amounts — far too little to extract at any sensible scale. So almost all of the delta 8 on the market is made by converting CBD, which hemp produces in abundance, into delta 8 through a chemical process. That is not a scandal in itself; plenty of ordinary products are made by converting one compound into another. What it does mean is that the quality of a delta 8 product depends heavily on how carefully that conversion was done and how thoroughly the result was cleaned up afterwards. This is exactly why a lab record matters more in the delta 8 aisle than almost anywhere else on the shelf, and why a product with no record attached is a hard no rather than a maybe.
Where THCA comes from
Nowhere. It is already there. THCA is what the living cannabis plant produces, and flower sold as THCA flower is conventionally grown, cured and jarred with no conversion step anywhere in the chain. The compound converts to THC when you apply heat, which is the same thing that happens every time anyone smokes or vaporizes flower of any kind. That is the cleanest structural difference between the two categories: one is grown and dried, the other is grown, extracted and converted. If minimal processing is something you care about, the answer is not subtle.
Strength, and the reason people argue about it
Delta 8 is widely described as milder than delta 9, and most people who have used both agree in broad terms. It is not a precise ratio, whatever the internet tells you: product format, dose, and your own tolerance move the result far more than the compound name does. THCA flower, once heated, is delta 9 THC — so it lands where regular flower lands. The practical reading is that delta 8 is the gentler end of the shelf and THCA flower is the standard one. If you found regular flower too strong, delta 8 is a reasonable thing to try. If you found it fine, THCA flower is what you already know.
Drug tests do not care about any of this
Standard testing looks for THC metabolites. Delta 8, delta 9 and heated THCA all produce metabolites that a routine panel can flag, and no panel in normal use distinguishes which compound you started with. Nothing in this comparison is a way around a test, and treating any of it that way is how people lose jobs. If you are tested for work, for sport or for anything else, the correct answer for the whole category is the same one: do not.
